Hiccups – What Causes Hiccups? What Are the Home Remedies of Hiccups?

This post is about…hiccup….what I want to say is…hiccup….the home remedies work…hiccup

Hiccup!!! Hiccups are so funny when it happens to someone else, right. However, when hiccups strike us, we simply want to get rid of them as soon as possible! There are so many funny instances, anecdotes, stories build just around hiccups. Interestingly, there is an Indian movie wherein the central character suffers from Tourette syndrome and one of her symptoms is hiccups. So what are hiccups?

What are Hiccups?

Hiccups refer to a condition wherein the diaphragm muscle contracts involuntarily but repeatedly. There is an opening between a person’s vocal chords. When this opening shuts while checking the air inflow, the hiccup sound is caused.

Interesting Fact: Hiccups are also referred to as Singultus. It is a Latin word and it means to catch the breath while crying.

Top 10 Reasons of Hiccups

So, you are not able to fathom the reason why hiccups are troubling you and that too suddenly amid a very interesting conversation that you are a part of? Read about them and know more.

1. Eating

If you have a habit of eating food quickly between office breaks or before running errands, then this might be the reason for your hiccups.

2. Overeating

Not only eating quickly but eating too much can cause hiccups as well. So, avoid being a glutton at unlimited pizza party this weekend.

3. Overdrinking

Yep, that ‘drinks on me’ by your friend might have caused you hiccups as you were not able to stop at one.

4. Carbonated Drinks

Gulping down your favorite carbonated drink might have led to this bout of your hiccups.

5. Smoking

What? Can Smoking cause hiccups? Yes, it seems that all things sinful can result in hiccups

6. Breathing Pattern

So, today you exhaled more than you inhaled the fresh oxygen in a bid to get rid of accumulated toxins. You never know, this benign act of yours might be the reason for your continual hiccups.

7. Temperature

When you eat or drink something extremely hot or cold, it can lead to hiccups as it changes the temperature of your body.

8. Emotions

Your emotional side could have resulted in an attack by hiccups. Hiccups are even caused when one is very excited or even stressed. Anxiety issues or fear of something too can lead to hiccups as well.

9. Ailments

At times, hiccups are a result of diseases irritating the nerves controlling diaphragm, due to strokes, tumor or even surgery.

10. Obnoxious Fumes

With rising levels of pollution, people have been suffering from the problem of accidentally inhaling certain fumes and this might be the reason for frequent bouts of hiccups.

How to Get Rid of Hiccups Quickly?

Here are some home remedies to take care of bouts of hiccups. However, it is not necessary that these would definitely work. This is because it is difficult to cure hiccups without the definite knowledge of their causes. There are so many crazy ways that people use to get rid of hiccups. Every person will tell you something different that he or she did and the hiccups actually stopped. In fact, what I think is that doing something crazy is a sure-shot way to relieve the bouts of hiccups.

1. Breath

Shortage of carbon dioxide in your body is one of the reasons for hiccup-bout. So, increasing the levels helps to a certain extent. You can hold your breath for around 10 seconds and then release. Doing this continually might help relieve the bout.

2. Water

Hiccups are related to the diaphragm. So, quickly drink a glass of regular or cold water to stop the hiccups. Alternatively, place a glass of water with a straw inserted in it on the floor. Stand erect but just bend your knees to make your mouth reach the straw. Drink water in this position but carefully. This is one of the good tricks to relieve hiccups.

3. Castor Oil

So, hiccups are troubling you a lot and there’s a meeting in an hour. To cure them, take a spoonful of honey and mix it with an equal quantity of castor oil. To consume this mix, you need to use your fingers. Yes, you need to lick this mix and not just once but for a couple of times. Do tell us, whether this helped.

4. Lemon

Whether or not you are fond of lemon, biting on it might help cure the hiccups. You can even have a spoonful of lemon juice. I talked to aunties and grannies in the neighborhood, but I was not able to get the reason why the lemon works for the hiccup.

5. Gargle

Take some regular water and gargle for a couple of times. It is believed that gargling relieves hiccups. Some people even responded saying that gargling with ice water is a better option to stop the hiccups.

6. Salt

Smell some salt, any type of salt that you have. Even this can cure hiccups. Yes, this sounded absurd but people say it helps.

7. Sour Foods

If you come across sour foods during a bout of a hiccup, you can chew them to say goodbye to hiccups. Sour foods like olive work quite well in such cases. Even vinegar is an alternative. Take a spoonful with a glass of water. The taste is so pungent that you completely forget about something like hiccups troubling you.

8. Sugar

If you cannot scare the hiccups with cold water or sour foods, bribe them with sugar. It is believed that when one swallows sugar, it stimulates the nerves. And eventually, one forgets about the hiccups. There’s a knack to take sugar to stop the hiccups effectively. For this, you need a teaspoon of sugar which needs to be kept in the mouth for around 5 seconds. Do not chew the sugar but let it dissolve on its own. Post this, sip some water.

9. Peanut Butter

If it is your favorite, then what are you waiting for? Christmas, eh? The reason something like peanut butter works is the consistency. This gooey stuff intrudes the breathing pattern when you gulp it down. And eventually, Ms. Hiccup is a thing of past.

10. Ice Cubes

If you are in a hurry and cannot do anything mentioned above, just rush to the refrigerator. Hunt for the ice cubes and chew them. You can even apply ice cubes on the sides of the neck to get rid of nasty hiccups.

11. Cocoa

Try to swallow powdered cocoa or chocolate drink powder. It is quite difficult to do it. But, difficult things seem to work with hiccups, don’t they?

A Note of Caution

However funny they might seem, hiccups could signal an underlying medical condition. At times, hiccups can also be the reason for respiratory disorders, gastrointestinal ailments, ulcers or malaria. If your hiccups do not go away in a short period of time but persist for more than a day or two, you need to call a doctor and make an appointment.

Your hiccups should not interrupt your sleep or food habits. Meet an ENT specialist for persisting bouts of hiccups. To cure hiccups, doctors even prescribe medicines at times.

How to Take Care of Your Armpits in Summer – Easy Remedies to Lighten and Detox Dark Underarms

How to Take Care of Your Armpits in Summer

“Summers are here!!!”, screamed Missy.
“So, what? We will beat it with ice creams” consoled Tanya.
“No, girl. I am scared about my exposed armpits. They are really dark and wearing halters is out of option for me.” Sighed Missy.
“Hmm… I know some ways to help you take care of this problem” comforted Tanya.

Who does not dread summer season! While each season brings with it a different set of benefits and problems, summer season seems to be extra troublesome. While some dread the heat, others are worried about their hair and skin and then there are some (say, mothers) who are troubled about the vacations of their kids. I might not know the answers to many problems, but I can certainly help you take care of your skin in summers, especially armpits or underarms. These little areas underneath our shoulders need a little extra attention and care in summers.

How to Take Care of Armpits in Summer

How to Take Care of Your Armpits in Summer

If you want to stay fresh and free this summer by wearing your favorite tank tops, halters, cold shoulder tops or sleeveless, you need to make sure your armpits are as lovely as your face. For this you need to:

A very important part of your armpit hygiene is cleansing. As they are tucked in corners, do not forget to cleanse your armpits thoroughly. For this, you need to apply soap or bath gel liberally and clean them. Pat them dry. Mere cleansing underarms help them keep away from problems like a bad odor, darkening or even excessive sweating.

Just like your face, your underarms require exfoliation every now and then. If you do not remember to exfoliate them, assign a day or date for their exfoliation. Your underarms require weekly exfoliation. Exfoliation helps remove impurities that build up over time.

Yes, be it summer, winter or monsoon, you do not forget to moisturize your underarms. However, the type of moisturizer used changes with the season. Summers require a light moisturizer that helps smooth the skin but does not result in excessive sweating. Moisturize them immediately after bath for best results.

Your underarms require a splash of coolness every now and then. For this, mere water will not help. Apply Aloe Vera gel twice a day and experience the instant freshness. Before applying Aloe Vera gel you can wipe your underarms with a wet cloth to prevent mix-up of odor.

Keep your attire minimalistic – meaning that you should not go overboard with decking up your dress. Avoid heavy fabric and scarves in summer to keep sweat at bay. Wearing cotton clothes work the best in the summer season. Being breathable fabric, cotton clothes are a good choice for your skin and especially, armpits.

Have you ever heard of underarm pads? Use them. They are quite helpful in the summer season. Not only do they absorb the excessive sweat, but keep your underarms clean and fresh. They even prevent your dress from spoiling near the armpits. With the help of underarm pads, you are saved from the embarrassment of sweat stains.

The best way to take care of your armpits in summer is to prevent problems rather than treating them. Application of baking soda mixed with water once a week keeps your underarms free of bacterial build-up and resulting infection. It even keeps odor at bay.

Try to keep your armpits dry this summer. This helps a lot in preventing a host of problems. After returning from a trip under the sun, cleanse your underarms and change into comfortable clothing.

How to Detox Your Armpits

Armpit detox might seem new to you but it is quite helpful in keeping your underarms fresh and lovely. There is no special detox as such for underarms but a little care will go a long way, making your summer stress-free.

Detox Mask

You need to apply a detox mask in your armpits to make them beautiful and healthy. For this, you need to prepare a paste out of Bentonite clay with apple cider vinegar. If required, add some water. Make sure you are not allergic to any of these by first applying it on a small patch. Spread it evenly on the armpits and let it rest for about 5-15 minutes. Wash it off with water. Applying this mask on the armpits, once a week, not only helps detox them but also keeps them fresh.

Body Odor

Begin with tackling bad odor. For this, prevention is better than cure. Using apple cider vinegar is one of the effective methods. In fact, if you are not fond of deodorants, then anti-bacterial properties of apple cider vinegar can help you. For this, you need cotton balls. Dip them in apple cider vinegar and apply on your underarms. If this sounds tedious, just use it as a rinse while bathing or as a spray.

For underarms detox, a detox diet is quite helpful. Stay away from foods that result in bad odor. If you are not aware what causes bad odor, we are here to help you out. Caffeinated drinks are typical offenders. Also in line are pork, fried foods, alcohol, garlic, and onions. Hence, during summers, fresh salads and leafy greens are best recommended for staying healthy and odor-free.

My beauty posts never go water-free. Whatever be the problem, water is the solution for me. Hydrating will keep you away from many skin troubles this summer. Drink plenty of fluids like water, buttermilk, fresh juices and stay away from canned drinks. It not only cleanses your body of toxins but also helps you stay healthy.

How to Lighten Dark Underarms

If you think that you are the only one cursed with dark underarms, then you are wrong. Many people have the problem of dark underarms for several reasons. It might result from using razors on that sensitive part of your body. Some even complain of dark armpits because of hair-removal creams that are laden with chemicals. If you have a problem with excessive sweating, your armpits can darken gradually. Dead cells that accumulate on armpits or usage of deodorants can also lead to problematic underarms. Other reasons could be acanthosis nigricans, an ailment that results in darkening of underarms, smoker’s melanosis, melasma or even Addison’s disease.

If you suffer from dark underarms, then before opting for expensive cosmetic treatments, take a walk to your kitchen. Here are some remedies that you can try at home. However, these remedies will not give instant results. They are slow but steady. For them to work, you need to be regular and patient as well.

The Universal Baking Soda

If you are fond of baking, then this will be readily available in your pantry. Just make a paste out of three tablespoons of baking soda and a little water, probably a tablespoon would suffice. You need to make a thick paste out of it. Now, apply liberally on both the armpits. Let it rest for another 15 minutes. The paste will eventually dry up. Wash the armpits with cold water. You can perform this remedy once or twice a week for best results.

The Bleaching Lemon

Lemon acts as bleach is quite well-known. From whitening clothes to lightening face, lemon is used liberally. Use this yellow magic on your underarms as well to make them look envious. To further benefit out of this mask, add yogurt as well. Being rich in lactic acid, yogurt helps whiten your underarms and even dissolves dead skin. Take equal quantities of lemon juice and yogurt, about a tablespoon. Make a fine paste out of it. Apply liberally on the underarms. Make sure to massage the mask. Let it rest for 15 minutes or so. Wash the area with lukewarm water.

The Exfoliating Orange Peel

Orange peel is brimming with Vitamin C, a blessing for dark underarms. To make the most of oranges, peel them off. Spread orange peels on a sheet. You can either keep them under the sun or in a shade to dry. When the peels are dried, grind them, making a fine powder. This peel powder can be stored in a jar and used for weeks. Now to prepare the mask, you need to take about two tablespoons of orange peel powder. To increase the effectiveness and even the fragrance, add rose water to it. Prepare a thick paste. Apply on the underarms and let it rest for 15 minutes. Massage gently and wash it off using lukewarm water. Use it regularly once every week for visible results.

The Hydrating Cucumber

Sometimes your armpits require hydration that gets lost in sweat. Hence, cucumber mask will help you keep your underarms stay fresh and hydrated. To prepare this pack, grate some cucumber and sieve the juice out of it. Add a tablespoon of lemon juice and a pinch of turmeric powder to the juice. Apply on the underarms and let it rest for 20 minutes. Gently massage and wash it off with lukewarm water.

The Moisturizing Milk

To make the most of milk, make sure you use it in raw form and not pasteurized. Raw milk is full of lactic acid that benefits your skin in more ways than one. To make raw milk work for your dark underarms, mix a tablespoon of it with a tablespoon of Bengal gram flour. Make sure that the paste is not runny but of a thicker consistency. Apply this liberally over the underarms and let it rest. In about 15 minutes, the mask will dry up. Now wash it off gently with lukewarm water. You can use this pack almost daily as it does not have any harmful ingredients. This will help cleanse your underarms, lighten them and even moisturize them.

How to Prevent Dark Underarms

Prevention is better than cure, they say. Make sure that you do not end up with darker underarms by regularly taking care of them.

  • You need to moisturize your underarms, irrespective of the season. Change the moisturizer depending on the weather. You can make use of coconut oil or aloe vera for this as well.
  • Say no to deodorants and antiperspirants. They do not good to your skin. If you fear body odor, make use of apple cider vinegar, baking soda or even rose water.
  • Stay away from shaving and hair removal creams for your underarms. These are quite hard on your sensitive armpits and lead to darker underarms. Waxing is quite beneficial and prevents discoloration as well.
  • Stick to cleanse – exfoliate – moisturize – detox routine for healthy underarms.
  • Keep a check on your weight. Excessive fat under your arms can result in a discoloration at times.
  • Wear breathable fabric to keep bad odor away.
  • Stay away from excessive cosmetic treatments which might lead to more problems than cure.

Your underarms or armpits are quite sensitive. You cannot experiment with them. Before applying anything here, test it on a small patch. Even herbal remedies might result in rashes and irritation. For example, lemon does not suit everybody. Fresh and healthy underarms are not always a result of outside care. You also need to take a peek inside. Make sure your diet is healthy and you are hydrated all day long. Stay beautiful this summer by taking care of your skin. If I have missed something, please ping me in the comment section below.

Super Simple Home Remedies for Acne and Acne Scars

At the dinner table, Nairuti was staring at her husband’s face for a long time. Feeling awkward, her husband inquired what the case was. She asked him whether that mark on your face is a pimple or you got hurt while shaving. Her husband smiled that it is indeed a pimple. In fact, he was suffering from acne.

Nairuti was surprised. She used to think that it was only females, especially young girls who suffered from acne. A male and especially a married one cannot ever get acne. Her husband laughed her off. He started looking for a skin specialist nearby on the internet. Herein, Nairuti interrupted him and suggested that she had some home remedies that he can try. They are harmless and cure acne completely. Her husband accepted the offer.

Home Remedies for Acne

Are you too suffering from acne? Then, I have some super simple home remedies that you can try and bid these nasty things off from your pretty face forever. You just need to make way to the kitchen and start gathering the things that I suggest. I did the same and I am feeling quite better. Acne does not only look bad but also hurts at time. My toddler has a habit of spotting them and even pricking them at times. Thank God for those home remedies worked. I suggest you should give these home remedies a try. They do not cost much but they give good results.

1. Lemony Lemon

Most preferred and most loved thing that helps fight acne for me is lemon. Lemon is full of vitamin C. this helps in drying up the acne. I have been using it for quite some time now. the best thing about lemon is that it even gives a super glow to the face. There are so many ways to use lemon for the acne.

  • Dip cotton balls in freshly squeezed lemon juice and apply it all over the face. Wash the face with water after some time.
  • Dry the lemon rinds under the sun or in the shade. This will take around 4-5 days or even more. Grind the dried lemon rind into powder. Add it to your favourite face pack or use it as it is. I like to add it to gram flour and a pinch of turmeric. Apply a thin layer on the face. Keep it for 15 minutes and wash it off.
  • If you are lazy at times, then just rub used lemon rinds (the inside part) on the face. Keep it for some time and wash it off.

2. Ice, Ice baby

This is another favourite. When I was young, I used to sweat a lot. So, every time I went out for get together, I used to apply an ice or two on the face before going out. You can even rub some ice on the face before make-up. This is because ice prevents sweating and hence, make-up stays intact. Ah! We are talking about pimples here.

If you are troubled with acne just before a party, try wrapping an ice or two in a fresh handkerchief and applying it on the pimples. You will notice that not only redness has reduced but also swelling. Ice is good for enhancing blood circulation in and around the acne. This not only tightens the pores but also clears the stubborn dirt that settles on the skin.

3. Scream for Steam

No, this is not my favourite, but I like it. Steam is good for skin every once in a while. To avoid extra hard work, just take some steam before a hot shower. I fill up a tub with scathing hot water and cover a towel around my head, while even including the tub. This is fun. The steam fills up the face. It feels quite good, especially if you are suffering from cough and cold. The reason I recommend steam during acne attack is that steam helps in opening up the clogged pores, one of the major reasons of pimples. When the pores open up, the skin is able to breathe properly. With this, all the oil, dirt and grime that had settled on the skin gets washed off. After taking steam, apply some light moisturizer to avoid dryness.

4. Pungent Garlic

You may not like the smell but Mr. Garlic is quite well known in the acne circles (pun intended). There are so many beautiful properties garlic has that it becomes impossible to ignore it. Garlic is not only antifungal but also antiviral as well. The antioxidant agents of garlic make it a hot favourite for getting rid of skin problems, especially pimples. The presence of sulfur in garlic is known to heal pimples quickly.

You just need to cut fresh garlic cloves into two. Rub the inside part on the pimples. Leave it for some five minutes or so and wash it off with warm water. Repeating it several times a day will help you in getting rid of the pimples, naturally. You can even eat raw garlic to purify the blood. However, do not overdo it.

5. Honey

I love honey, especially the organic one. The best part about honey is that drinking it with warm water helps clear the system and applying it clears the pimples. Both ways, it works wonder on the skin. You can even apply it on your hair as a mask. For pimples, just apply a thin layer of honey on the face. Keep it for some fifteen minutes. Without any doubt, you will need to wash it off with warm water as honey is quite sticky.

6. Powers of Papaya

Powerful papaya works on pesky pimples. While this could be a tongue twister, this is indeed a great home remedy. Before gulping down a bowl of papaya, set aside one or two cubes to apply on the face. You can either rub them as it is or just mash a piece or two and apply it all over the face, especially around the pimples. Leave it for 20 minutes and wash it off with lukewarm water. The beauty of papaya is that it helps the skin in many ways. I like touching my skin again and again after a papaya mask. It gets soft and supple. Papaya prevents the pus in pimples. It even reduces the inflammation.

7. Aloe Vera Gel

I can swear by the benefits of aloe vera gel. It has helped me several times. Whenever I need a dose of some cooling effect on my skin, I grab some gel and apply it. It feels so good. If you can source some fresh aloe vera plant, then cut the leaves in half lengthwise. Use the gel inside it. You can apply aloe veragel on burns, pimples and even as a hair mask. If you do not get fresh aloe vera gel, use an organic brand sold in stores. Apply aloe vera gel overnight and wash it off in the morning. It is like a skin tonic for me.

8. Baking Soda

What!! Yes, even I was surprised when I heard it for the first time. But friends, this thing really really works. Just mix baking soda with some water and prepare a thick paste out of it. Apply it on the pimples and leave it to dry. Wash it off with warm water. Baking Soda helps in exfoliating the skin and even dries up the excess oil secretion. It even fights off the fungus that causes acne. It is a win-win for the skin.

9. Fuller’s Earth

If you have an overall oily skin, apply fuller’s earth as a mask or just apply it over the acne. Prepare a thick paste by mixing fuller’s earth with water. Dab it on the pimples and leave it to dry. Wash it off with warm water. This clay mask helps in warding off the excess oil in the skin. if you have applied it as a mask and your skin feels dry thereafter, use a light moisturizer afterwards.

Goodbye Acne Scars

Acne is not that troubling as the residue scars are. I have been there and experienced the trauma of scars. While acne bid goodbye after a week or two, the scars take time to heal. I still have a couple of them. However, if you can, then make use of these home remedies that help in treating scars naturally.

Juice a cucumber or just grate it. apply on the scars as it is or mix it with lemon juice for application. Keep it for around 15-20 minutes and then eat it up, oops, wash it off I mean.

Slice a fresh tomato and rub it on the scars. Tomato has been quite beneficial in treating all kinds of scars. It even treats the blemishes and gifts an even skin tone. This is due to ample vitamin A present in it. What more! Tomatoes are full of antioxidants – something that every skin desires.

If you get hold of fresh sandalwood stick, then rub it on a stone and apply the resultant paste on the skin. alternatively, you can use the ready-to-use powder available in the stores. To further increase effectiveness, mix sandalwood paste with rose water. The benefit of this paste is that you can apply it overnight and wash it off in the morning next day. I just love the smell of the sandalwood and merrily follow this routine.

Looks who’s here – the good old turmeric. Use a pinch of turmeric powder with gram flour and raw milk. Apply it on the face. It not only heals the scars but also gives you a glowing skin. Alternatively, apply just ground turmeric on the face. Wash it off with warm water after some time.

Eat and Drink

To say goodbye to pimples forever, you need to make lifestyles changes. Firstly, make sure that you are drinking enough water throughout the day. Staying hydrated is quite beneficial. Further, you need to eat lots of fresh and seasonal fruits and vegetables. Acne might also result due to unhealthy eating habits. Keep a tap on your diet and look out what brings a change in your skin. Your skin might be reacting to excess of oily food, sweets or even junk food. Savor foods rich in antioxidants. It benefits the skin in several ways. Also make sure that your diet is balanced and has adequate minerals and vitamins in it.

Acne does not mean that your skin has lost its sheen forever. It can be undone and the texture of the skin can be improved. It might seem to be an unending process but these home remedies really help. Do try them on a regular basis and you will notice a visible difference. Till then, happy healing!

17 Tried and Tested Home Remedies for Common Cold and Cough

Home Remedies Cough Cold

Earlier, I didn’t believe in home remedies. However, after the birth of my kid, I resorted to home remedies to make her heal naturally. She suffers from constant cold and coughs during winters and even during the change of season.

This was the first time I took precautionary measures to prevent cold and cough rather than treating it afterwards. Just like other medications, even home remedies work in a certain manner. If you regularly give your kid a certain home remedy, then her body becomes immune to it. What I do is adopt a certain thing for some time. I stop it for a while and then return to the same.

Mustard Oil

It is one of the most effective remedies for common cold and cough. Being warm in nature, it helps provide relief from congestion. Mustard oil could be mixed and match with other things to help cure common cold and cough.

A warm oil massage using mustard oil is quite beneficial. As the oil is quite greasy, you can alternatively massage it on the chest and back for relief.

You can even warm garlic pieces and carom seeds in mustard oil. Make sure that you do not bring it to the boiling point but just warm the oil. Massaging chest with this mix is quite beneficial.

I like honey because of its versatility. It can be used in several ways to treat the onset of common cough. It helps relieve sore throat and even helps in building immunity.

  • Take a teaspoon of honey with a pinch of turmeric. You can have some warm water with it.
  • Add some ginger juice to a teaspoon of honey. It helps in treating cough.
  • If you are fond of tea, then add some lime and honey to a warm cup of tea. Do not add milk to this concoction. You might think why I specially mentioned milk. This is because my husband was surprised to read a recipe of tea that had lime in it. He was surprised whether lime and milk could be had together. For inattentive husbands like mine, I make sure to advice people about not adding milk.
  • If your toddler coughs at nighttime, make her have some honey before retiring to bed. This will help her sleep better.

I like sipping ginger and lemon tea when I am down with cough. Just smelling it brings me to senses. The juice of ginger is quite relieving too. Have it raw or mix it with honey to get rid of cold.

Carom Seeds

Once a friend told me that carom seeds help relieve cold. I tried it on my husband first. The result is quite good. Crush a teaspoon of carom seeds and roast them on a griddle. If you have a running nose, smell the roasted carom seeds for relief. You can bunch the roasted seeds in a handkerchief and tie it up. Smell it whenever you have a bout of running nose. Eating roasted carom seeds with some salt gives relief too. As I mentioned above, massage carom seeds mixed with warm mustard oil for getting rid of cold.

Hot Griddle

When common cold results in the onset of respiratory problems, then the hot griddle method is quite good. I heat a griddle up and then put a thick handkerchief or a small thick towel on it for a couple of seconds. Test it on my knuckles. And then place it on the chest of my toddler (with her clothes on). This procedure is to be performed cautiously. The towel should not be scathing hot, just warm enough. It is quite good as it helps provide relief and even clears up the phlegm. You can even massage mustard oil on the chest first and then place the warm towel.

An antibiotic, turmeric is one of the ancient remedies for treating several ailments. For treating common cold and cough, boil a pinch of turmeric in a cup of water. Relish it when it is warm enough. You can even add turmeric to a cup of milk and boil it. Instead of adding sugar, add jaggery to the milk.

Salt water

One of the remedies that my mother has been advocating since my childhood is salt water gargles. Warm a little water and a teaspoon of salt to it. Gargling with this water is quite relieving for sore throat. I find it so yummy that I even drink the water in between the gargles. You can even boil the water with turmeric and salt and gargle with it when it is warm enough.

One of the folklores is that eating jaggery is quite relieving for cough. I prepare a sweet by roasting whole wheat flour with some clarified butter or ghee. When it turns brownish in colour, I add equal amount of water as flour and then add chunks of jaggery to it. This sweet helps treat cold and cough, they say. However, I prepare it as it is quite soothing during the attack of cold.

Boil two cups of water. Add an inch of cinnamon, half a teaspoon of carom seeds, a pinch each of turmeric powder and black pepper powder, some leaves of holy basil, grated ginger, clove and fennel seeds. Simmer it on a low flame till it reduces to half the quantity. Switch off the flame and add two teaspoons of jaggery to this. This is the ultimate treatment I love. Have it once or twice a day till you get rid of cold.

This is a paste prepared out of boiled gooseberries and a gamut of spices. It is quite tedious to prepare. My mother does all the hard work. However, at times, to save her all the labor, we purchase the readymade variety. It helps a lot if had in smaller quantities (a teaspoon) along with warm milk. It even helps in building immunity.

I am quite fond of this recipe. I mix a pinch of grounded asafetida with a teaspoon of clarified butter or ghee. Warm this mixture up. Apply it on ribs, chest, back, soles, nails and fontanel of the kid. The smell of the magic spice gives relief, especially to the babies.

Lukewarm water

The importance of lukewarm water is not much publicized. However, it helps instantly. Sipping warm water throughout the day is quite helpful in cold and cough. Warm water even helps reduce throat inflammation and replenish the loss of fluid from the body. Having a bath with warm water is equally useful. Make sure you apply some moisturizer after a warm water bath. This is because warm water dries up the skin.

Malabar Nut Leaves

Popularly known as adulsa leaves, the leaves of Malabar nut are quite useful. To treat cold and cough, boil a cup of water and add roughly chopped leaves to it. Simmer it on a low flame. When the color of this water is slightly greenish, it is required to switch the flame off. As this concoction is slightly bitter, you can have it with either honey or jaggery. Add one of them after switching the flame off.

Betel Leaves

That Betel leaves are used as mouth fresheners is a common knowledge. However, they are also quite useful in treating common cold and cough. Apply a little oil or ghee on the back side of the leaves (light green in colour). Place it on the chest. Make sure that the greasy part (light green) is on the chest. Heat a griddle and place thick handkerchief or a small towel on it for a couple of seconds. Now, apply this warm towel on the leaf for a minute. Repeat this procedure for around 5-10 minutes. This procedure is quite helpful if you perform it before retiring to bed at night.

Add steaming water to a bucket or a big container. Place a towel over your head and bend to inhale the steam. You can even add eucalyptus oil to the steam. Inhaling this steam helps relieve congestion and also headache due to cold.

Eucalyptus Oil

Rub some eucalyptus oil to the soles of your feet. This oil is quite helpful is treating cold and cough. This is because it clears blocked up sinuses. Further, it even helps in dislodging mucus, making it easier to breathe. Alternatively, a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil on a handkerchief, near your bedside, give a good night’s sleep.

Anti-fungal, antibacterial and antibiotic as well, garlic is one of the most recommend remedies for treating cold and cough. Mince two cloves of garlic. Add this to half a glass of water. Drink it immediately. Garlic is quite helpful in eliminating toxins from the body and helps it heal quickly. Alternatively, rub the feet with olive oil at night. After this, rub minced garlic over the soles of the feet. Wear socks after this procedure.

Precautionary Note

Please do not try all the home remedies at once. Opt for one of the applications and use it as recommended. As all the elements are warm in nature, they might increase the heat in the body and induce inflammation, if taken all at once. I opt for a remedy that can be applied and another remedy that can be consumed. I continue this for a day or two. However, if there is no relief, I change it and opt for another remedy.

Our kitchen is full of foods and things that can be used to treat common ailments. In fact, my grandmother didn’t like to visit the doctor. She often went to the kitchen and had something or the other, without cribbing about the pain (I have a habit). There are so many benefits of spices, herbs, foods and elements in our kitchen that there is no need to step out of the home to treat sickness and weakness. In fact, many foods even help in building immunity and keep disorders at bay. However, I would like to cover these foods in my next post.
