The quintessential question of ‘What should I do?’ of yesteryears has been replaced by ‘What should I watch on television’ in the modern age. While people of all ages suffer from this question, parents of young children worry a little more. This is because, with children, the type of content matters the most. Many parents have found the easy way out by allowing kids to scroll YouTube shorts. It is the safest way to engage the kids without keeping a watch over the content that they are watching. However, some parents, especially those of pre-teens and teenagers, want their children to watch something meaningful and entertaining at the same time. If you are on the lookout for a series for your 10+ children, then the new addition to Netflix – Astérix and Obelix might be the right one. Read more to know why.

The Background and the Basics
Astérix and Obelix: The Big Fight is based on one of the many issues of the very popular French comics. Authored by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo, the comics was first published in the year 1959. This series marks the first foray of Netflix France into the world of animated series. Since its introduction, the comics have been converted into both animated and live-action movies. The background score of the series is composed by Mathieu Alvado. It blends comic and adventurous tones, paying tribute to the cult Asterix animated movies.
What to expect
An Astérix adventure can be termed as quirky in the modern lingo. It is all about absurd themes, strange characters, and action sequences. The setting of the Gaulish Village makes the series more interesting in the modern context. For those who are not initiated with the characters and the Roman empire, it will take some time to sink into the setting. It is advisable not to quit the series on its first episode. The series is a limited one with just five episodes but watching it for five days is like relishing a sweet after a spicy meal.

Why this Astérix adventure hits the right notes
- Clean Content
There are so many restrictions that need to be kept in mind while choosing content for pre-teens. While they cannot watch repetitive animated series that they watched when they were young, children also cannot watch the content that adults or teenagers watch. The tag of clean content is a prerequisite for pre-teens. Here is where Astérix and Obelix on Netflix fit the bill.
2. Feelings and Emotions
It is a huge task for pre-teens to understand and process their emotions. More than that, pre-teens need to know what are their values and how to hold on to them. This series will make them understand friendship through the bond between Astérix and Obelix. Further, children will get to know the feeling of patriotism through the plot where Gauls stand by their village even during dire circumstances. Apart from these, pre-teens will learn about resilience, strength, honesty, and many similar emotions and feelings.
3. Action Sequences
For all those who are fans of action movies and series, this Astérix adventure on Netflix is something that they can watch (repetitively). The fighting sequences are a healthy mix of fantasy, adventure, action, and comedy, which makes them lovable and laughable.
4. Humor
The character Obelix is one of the funniest characters. He is extraordinarily strong as his clumsiness made him fall into the cauldron of magic potion in his childhood. He becomes the reason for many injuries and mishaps that take place in the village. His fellow villagers do not allow him to drink the magic potion in the present times because they fear that it will make him all the more destructive.
5. Presentation
The production of the series is quite premium. There are so many references to cult characters from other movies and series. For instance, the fluorescent tints from the magic potion give a bow to the Spider-Verse movies. For people who love taking a dig at the Roman Empire, this series will make them roll on the floor, laughing. There are so many references to pop culture and adventure themes, spruced up with oodles of sarcasm and pun. Pre-teens who are well-read and understand such content will fall in love with the names of the characters as well.
All said and done, if you are still reading this post, you should know that I would strongly recommend reading Asterix and Obelix books rather than watching content on television. Children who read are much more aware and enlightened of the things happening around them as compared to those who just watch content. A classic example of this is the Harry Potter movie series. Children who have read the series of Harry Potter books have understood the movie series in totality. Introduce your children to a world of books, there is no world better than that. Happy reading!
